Accountable? – Adulting is Hard Sometimes

by Komal Patel
How do you keep accountable for the things you need to do in life?

Ok. So here’s the deal.

I talk… A LOT. I think we all do.

Let me back track a little. Getting ahead of myself.

What a shocker.

I have been thinking a lot about accountability. There are so many things I TALK about doing all the time….

I will get up at 5am to go to the gym. I’ll pack my lunch the night before so I don’t waste money and eat out. I will write my blog posts weeks in advance.  I will study more cooking techniques. I’ll take the dog for a run….

Like SO many things that I don’t do.

Today’s post is all about real talk. Today is about relating to the millions of people out there who do what I do.

It’s not that we don’t want to change, or that we want to be lazy. It’s just that sometimes it’s easier to build up these things in your mind then actually execute them. You know?

Why is that?

Why do we do that? I WISH I had an answer.

For me it’s about motivation and accountability.

None of the items I listed are hard to fulfill. All of those things can easily be done, but since I have no accountability to MYSELF they seem to fall to the waste side.

Holding yourself accountable for your actions is hard. Like really hard. There is always a way to talk yourself out of what you need to do. A justification or a “I can do that on another later” type of thing.

Here is the REAL talk.

The HARD honest truth.

This is never going to change unless you change.

I have to admit…I’m not there myself.

Talking to J the other day I asked him….how do I MAKE myself do the things I want to do or should do?

He didn’t have an answer for me.

There is no right answer. You have to dig inside yourself and find the motivation.

Here is what I have started to do to keep myself accountable…..

Get a Planner

Justin writes EVERYTHING down….I’m pretty sure he schedules his bathroom breaks….that’s how in detail his planner is. He also keeps everything on his phone.

I have taken the opposite approach of buying a planner and writing my daily tasks down in it.

There is a sense of accomplishment when you cross something off.

I literally thrive off it. Just feels so good.

I am not as in detail as Justin….but I stick to the main tasks I need to complete. If it needs to be more granular (like, if I know I am going to forget) then I write it down.

By writing things down and viewing it consistently you are holding yourself accountable. I don’t know about you but there is something about seeing that TO DO written down and not crossed out that drives me crazy!

It even makes me feel a little bad about myself. I know that’s not good, but for me it’s whatever it takes to get my ass into gear.

I have just started this process….really….just started this week….so it is new and it definitely isn’t perfect, but I think it’s a good start to holding myself more accountable for things I need, want or should do.

I am going to keep you all updated on this and I would love if you guys updated me on how you are doing?

What are your suggestions for holding yourself accountable? It’s pretty clear that I need some help! I would love to know your suggestions. I need to kick my ass into gear.

The only way to get things accomplished is to just DO THEM!

This is so true! I do so much better when I have a planner. I have been looking for the perfect one for 2018 because I know it’s a necessity! I use to use one all the time and haven’t the last 3-6 months. Hope it helps you as much as it does me ???? I need to just buy one instead of shopping around !

Totally understand! It’s also so much different when you are doing something you truly WANT to do…then you hold yourself accountable. But if it’s anything else, finding the motivation or desire is tough.

This is so true. Adulting comes with so many challenges. But with support from family and friends, and right motivation, things will get better.
