Like some people, I tend to eat when I am stressed out. Sometimes I over indulge in the guilty pleasures of junk food, such as, french fries, mac and cheese, chips…the list can go on. Most of the time those types of food will leave you feeling weigh downed, not just physically but mentally. Luckily, I have comprised a list of foods that are not only good for your body, but for your mind, leaving you feeling less stressed and anxious.

1. Oysters

According to mindbodygreen.com, an imbalance of zinc to copper correlates with anxiety. Increased copper and decreased zinc may lead to anxiety and stress. Oysters are low in fat, calories and cholesterol, and are high in protein, calcium and of course, zinc! Not only are oysters a great food for stress and anxiety, but in some parts of the world they are considered an aphrodisiac. Sex is a great stress reliever. These two must go hand-in-hand!

2. Turmeric

Turmeric is packed full of curcumin; (the substance that gives turmeric its yellow color) according to Huffington Post, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant power can prevent stress and anxiety. Curcumin enhances serotonin and dopamine, known mood instigators, and is an effective, natural, option for depression.

3. Blueberries

Blueberries are filled with antioxidants and vitamin C, making them a colossal stress-reliever. When we are stressed our bodies crave vitamin C. This is an easy and delicious way to get your daily dose of vitamin C while reducing stress levels.

4. Dark Chocolate

This is my favorite stress reliever! A new study conducted by live science announced that people who consider themselves stressed, had lower levels of stress hormones after eating chocolate every day for 2 weeks. Dark chocolate makes the perfect mid-day snack to make it through those long work days.

5. Avocado

This super-fruit is full of vitamin B, which we need for healthy nerves and brain cells. Avocado is rich in monounsaturated and potassium. This green delight can be transformed into many delicious, stress reliving dishes, including yummy avocado shakes, for those late night cravings.

6. Green Leafy Vegetables

Like dark chocolate, green leafy vegetables are packed with dopamine, keeping people calm and healthy. There are so many options of leafy vegetables to choose from. Find your favorite and cook it up! Try my chard and garlic recipe with your next dinner.

7. Fermented Foods

Some fermented foods, like yogurt, contain beneficial bacteria’s that improve brain functions. Avoid eating processed foods and sugar as they contribute to your gut flora, which is important for a healthy, positive mind.

8. Walnuts

This is a heart-healthy snack that when eaten in moderation can help lessen the symptoms of depression. Walnuts are chocked full of omega-3 fatty acids which are good for the brain.

9. Salmon

Just like walnuts, salmon is heavy in omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon has plenty of brain boosting properties to help fight depression and stress.

10. Green Tea

This drink has tons of antioxidants and great health benefits. Amino acids in green-tea are known to boost metabolism and provide anti-stress benefits.
