Dal Makhani, which literally translates to lentils cooked in butter is one of my favorite Indian comfort dishes.
It goes great with a spicy pickle, some jeera rice and naan.
It’s not exactly the healthiest meal that you’ve ever had, but hey, fuck it. You deserve to treat yourself from time to time!
The dish is made with split lentils and whole lentils like kidney beans and then is cooked down with butter, duh, and lots of spices and cream.
You’ll be LICKING your bowl clean!
This dish definitely takes some time to make, which helps bring all the spices together and cook the lentils down. Its mostly served for special occasions, or at a restaurant, but if you’re feeling indulgent, why not tonight?!
Enjoy!

- Soak the dal and kidney beans in cold water overnight. Drain, rinse and set aside.
- On the Instant Pot, set it to sauté and add the oil 1 tbsp. butter.
- Add cumin seeds, onion and salt to taste and fry for 6-7 minutes or until onion begins to brown.
- Add the garlic, ginger, chili powder and garam masala. Stir to combine.
- Add the pureed tomatoes and continue to cook for 5 minutes or so, stirring well.
- Add the lentils and kidney beans and water to the pot and mix well.
- Close the lid and make sure the pressure valve is closed.
- Cook for 30 minutes on high.
- Once the pressure has released, turn the instant pot back on to sauté and add in the cream and let simmer for 10 minutes.
- Stir in the remaining butter.
- Allow the pressure to release naturally. About 20 minutes.
- Serve with a tbsp. of ghee and garnish with cilantro.
If you want the lentils and kidney beans broken down more use an immersion blender to smooth out. This dish is supposed to be buttery, so don't be shy and feel free to add more butter to your bowl and serve with jeera rice and naan.

This sounds really nice. I love lentils and I am a big fan of Tarka Dahl. I will have to give this recipe a try.
I can see myself trying this out. It may not be the healthiest but if it tastes good, I’m game.
This looks like a really delicious dish for me to try. I love lentils! Maybe I can convince my husband to eat more lentils if I make it this way. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
I can already taste it … butter and cream? Sign me up! Though my lactose intolerance may not agree, this will be delish.
The more I read about your blogs, the more I learn to appreciate the Indian cuisine. I love that all your recipe will really make us lick the bowls!
