Why I Wash My Hair Once a Week

I only wash my hair once week.

Some of you are reading this and thinking shit, that’s gross. But wait, hear me out.

Others are thinking damn, wish I could do that. & you CAN.

My tresses are long and relatively thick, so it takes a really long time to dry. I don’t like to use a blow dryer (too much heat), so often times I let it air dry and I keep brushing I out to prevent frizz.

Before I wash it I like to mix up a concoction of potions and leave it in my hair overnight to get my hair primed and ready for a wash.

🤍 Castor Oil 🤍

for growth, thickness and color

🤍 Argan oil 🤍

for shine

🤍 Arnica soothing oil 🤍

for a dry scalp

🤍 Growth oil serum 🤍

for nutrients, growth and strength

🤍 Coconut oil 🤍

for moisture and frizz.

I like to mix these potions up in a glass and let the glass sit in HOT WATER, to make the treatment warm so it can penetrate my scalp better. I use THIS head cap to keep it all together.

(keep this separate than your every day shower cap)

There is definitely an art to going a week (or maybe even two?) without washing your hair + but seriously everyone thinks my hair freshly washed, but really I’m just a lazy bitch with a few tricks up my sleeves.

Since my mop is thick and wavy, it is also V dry. I NEED all the extra oils to penetrate my hair/scalp which is why I do a mask + since I am not stripping my hair of its natural oils by washing it every day, I’m allowing time for the oils to soak in over time.

Also, since I let it air dry most days I usually sleep on it to help smooth out some of that crazy frizzy volume. This is just another reason why I don’t wash every day. Usually my hair is smoothed out by day 2, but if I washed my hair all the time it would interrupt this process.

When I decided to stop washing my hair all the time it was a total struggle.

Think Danny Zuko from GREASE. It was straight nasty, BUT, as I let more and more time go in between washes my hair naturally decreased in oiliness and stayed fresh longer.

NOW: how can you keep your hair FRESH in between washes?

Don’t use junk in in-between washes:

Oils are amazing (like I said above), but oil is oil and if not naturally produced it is going to build up and leave you looking like you just got back in from a snow storm.

If you do need a little product try something without oil, parabens or silicones.

Don’t touch it:

Just don’t, k? Your hands carry all the days SHIT. So don’t touch your hair!

Wear your hair up:

I usually wear my hair half up half down. I like wearing it this way because I can get the majority of my hair out of my face so I’m not touching it that much + it still looks like a cute hairstyle.

Dry Shampoo:

Dry shampoo can dry out your locks. So, use it! Just not right away. I usually start using the dry shampoo on day 3 and day 5. Day 7 I am washing! Dry shampoo can dry out your hair.

Use a shower cap:

To keep your hair dry in the shower use a shower cap. Right now I am using a plastic one because the plush one I had grew mold in it. ICKY, right?!

Currently on the hunt for a new, reusable, washable cap. If you know of one give me your recs!

Talk to you soon.

I try to also wash my hair as little as possible as I have a really intense colour red at the moment. These are all good hacks!

Dang! Generally I’m lucky if I can get 3 days. I wear my hair up mostly in a messy bun. But the bangs and hairline show the most grease. It’s better since I switched to shampoo and conditioner bars rather than liquid though, before I was every other day!

I too don’t wash mine and my children’s hair all of the time. It’s true it does dry it out. We also use Jamaican Black Castor Oil and I use unprocessed shea butter. Smells like doo but it keeps you do good!

I have long hair and I wash it every four days. I find that the less often I wash it, the more my hair adjusts and doesn’t get as oily.

I don’t have very long hair but get away with washing only every 2-4 days (thanks to some dry shampoo and night wrapping!).

Very fascinating and inspiring to read about your routine and the other comments. My experience is quite the opposite with hair that’s very thin and with bangs that sometimes require their own extra freshen-up. But might be worth trying to “train” my hair.

I think the consensus is the finer the hair the more you wash and the thicker the hair the less you wash!

I don’t wash my hair often (2-3 times a week) because my hair tends to get dry and frizzy. I let my scalp produce its natural oil and I give my hair a thorough brushing before I go to bed. I will have to try that “potion” you mixed. Looks like it will bring back my hair’s shine and bounce.
