10 Non-Traditional Valentine’s Day Ideas

Red over the knee boots

So… V-day is next week and I have been seeing a lot of fun and cute ideas to celebrate… but I have to be honest here guys…I really don’t care.

Ok, so before you get those panties in a twist, hear me out.

I have never been one for Valentine’s Day. Although it is fun in theory, to me, it is much more fun to do a Galantine’s with your friends, show your parents how much you love them, or do something unconventional with your partner.

Valentine’s Day can be any day you choose to show your love and that love can be shared with whomever.

Whenever I think of Valentine’s Day I don’t just think of romanticism, I think of love as a whole. I mean, isn’t that point?

I don’t need candy, I certainly do not need roses (lilies and sunflowers are my favorite), but what I do need/want is quality time, time to spend with a loved one, friend, or partner.

You all know how much I love to eat, so I can’t hate on the whole dinner date thing, but consider some out of the box options in addition to dinner.

Below I have 10 non-traditional Valentine’s Day ideas. Some are for lovers, other can apply to different people in your life such as family friends.

Overnight Backpacking Trip:

For the right couple, few things bring you closer than good old-fashioned self-reliance. So pack your backpacks with all the essentials (plus a surprise bottle of champagne) and hit the trail. Sleeping under the stars is an added romantic perk.

Take a Cooking Class:

Take a cooking class together. Learn some new skills in the kitchen, and enjoy making a gourmet meal with a little guidance. You’ll never feel fancier! Take a class with your significant other, show your mom you really can cook or make it a gal’s night out. Don’t forget the wine!

Skip V-day:

Blasphemy! But seriously…are you a single sister or in a long term relationship? Skip Valentine’s-Day altogether and put the money you would have spent on a date night in a jar to use for future adventures.

Learn about Love in a New Culture:

Learn a language or learn how other cultures celebrate the day of love! For example, in Japan, women give men chocolates on February 14th, while some parts of Britain serve buns baked with caraway seeds and raisins. How interesting, right?

Make a Vision Board of How you Want your Lives Together to be in the Future:

This is one of my favorites! I love vision boards they are so….visual [hehe]. Include pictures of your future home, outfits, and food, whatever! Get the creative juices flowing!

Role Play:

Take this one as you please.

Plan a night out with your partner where you both are different people with different names, lives, backgrounds…meet at  a bar, pretend like you don’t know each other and create a whole new love story!

 Celebrate on a Different Day:

Restaurants are fucking expensive and crowded on Valentine’s Day. I don’t know why they jack the prices up for that same steak you had last week. Think about postponing your night out to the next day or the upcoming weekend.

Make it a Game Night:

Invite over other couples, friends and family. Get naughty with Cards Against Humanity or put your brains to the test and play Risk. The point is spending time together.

 Get Artsy:

Go to a gallery or museum or even grab some supplies from Michael’s and have your very own paint and wine night at home.

A Scavenger Hunt:

I did this with some girlfriends about 10 years ago and it was so much fun! You can make your own or even look for a public event. It’s a great way to get to know the person/people you are with, while having a full night out on the town.

What are some non-traditional things you do on Valentine’s-day? xx
