FAVE SPOTS: SAN DIEGO EDITION

by Komal

Hi EVERYONE!

Lets talk Fave Spots: San Diego Edition

As, some of you know I live in sunny San Diego! I have lived here for about 1 ½ years and still have not done half the things this city has to offer. There are literally, SO.MANY.OPTIONS. From beaches to parks, Mexican food to Japanese food, hikes, festivals, sunshine, fun, the list really does go on. What’s a gal to pick?!

Due to the never ending options that San Diego has to offer, I have put together a guide for all you sweets and masala’s to enjoy and discover!

Beaches:

If San Diego is known for one thing, it would DEF be our beaches. With year-round sunshine and moderate temps, it is always the perfect day to sit, relax and soak in the sun.

Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach, or OB as the locals call it, is one of my favorite beaches. This neighborhood is the quintessential beach side town. With its laid back, hippie vibe, you can take a stroll to the OB pier, or play in the sand with your furry friend at Dog Beach.Ocean Beach

Pacific Beach

This area of town is where full of young, vibrant people. Pacific Beach, known as PB, is home to many bars and restaurants. If you like to party by the beach PB is the spot for you.

Coronado

With one of the best beaches in the country, Coronado brings you back to an older time. The infamous Hotel Del has seen the likes of Grace Kelly gracing its beaches. Do s’mores on the beach, or go fishing off the Ferry Landing Pier; cozy up with a loved one as Coronado is for lovers.

What to Eat:

California as a lot to offer in the department; with fresh produce and fish at our fingertips, San Diego has a flavor of its own!

California Burrito

My boyfriend is obsessed with California Burritos! Whenever we have friends visit, this (in addition to In and Out…because, well, who doesn’t love In and Out) is the first thing on their list to eat. The anticipation must be killing you to know what it is…alright, alright, I’ll tell you!  It is a fluffy tortilla filled with perfectly cooked carne asada, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo AND……DRUMROLL….the ingredient that makes it a California Burrito….. FRENCH FRIES. Yes, you read that correctly. BOOM.

I have decided to not weigh in on the best burrito in San Diego debate. There are so many places to choose from. Pick one and let me know what YOUR fave places are.

Ramen

Ramen is probably not the first thing you think of when discussing food in San Diego. That’s ok. I’m here to tell you, ramen is BOMB out here. I may be biased, as my ramen obsession has reached an all-time high. I’m talking once a week here, although I wish it could be every day (Justin, the BF, won’t let me).

After dining at several ramen experiences throughout the city, Jinya, in PB (Pacific Beach) has quickly become my favorite spot.

Jinya’s slow-simmered pork broth is to die for. I am legit salivating at this very moment thinking about it. It is THAT.GOOD. All their noodles are handmade and aged for three days. As a girl transported from the East Coast, where ramen is widely known, I have to say, this is the best ramen on the west coast.

Craft Beers

San Diego is known as “the Craft Beer Capital of America.” With over 100 breweries in the county, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Sip on an IPA while taking a tour at one of our many award winning breweries. Check out the Coronado Brewing Company where you can kick back with a brewski with your four-legged friends.

Other Shit:

If beaches and brews aren’t your thing, don’t worry, there are STILL, so many other options for you.

Balboa Park

This place is sick! Balboa Park is ranked among the top 10 parks in the country. It has 16 gardens, awesome museums, a theater and did I mention a zoo?

Yeah. A LOT going on here.

Justin and I went to the park on a Saturday and had a lovely little picnic. It was so fun to unwind in the park, have a few bubbles (I am not encouraging bringing booze to the park…well, kind of) and people watch.

The San Diego Zoo

I have yet to make it to the zoo, but it is ranked one of the top 5 in the country.  The zoo has two locations; the main zoo is located in Balboa Park, mentioned above, and the Safari Zoo is in Escondido, about 45 minutes outside of the city.

If you have already visited the zoo I would love to know what you think. Leave me a comment below!

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Park:

Guys. This park is stunning. Think high cliffs, a never-ending ocean, and a shit ton of Torrey Pine trees (hence the name).  There a BUNCH of trails that go along the cliffside which offer stellar views of the Pacific. There are different levels of hiking for all experience types.

Bonus SECTION:

 Sweet

Looking for something sweet in the city? Check out the Baked Bear in PB for delectable ice cream sandwiches made from freshly baked cookies ad hot pressed ice cream! All I can say is YUMMY!

Masālā

Looking for something spicy to do? Take a trip to Old Town where you can experience the birthplace of California, while enjoying spicy Mexican food and live mariachi shows.
